Signs that Death is Near

Signs that Death is Near

Many physical and emotional changes are a natural part of the dying process.

We’re here to guide and support you through them.

As the body begins to shut down, it’s normal to see changes in how it works. These signs are part of the natural process of dying. They are not emergencies or problems you need to fix.
Your Hospicare care team will help you understand what to expect, how to minimize discomfort, and how to support your loved one with compassion and calm.

Common Changes You May Notice

Every person's experience is unique, but some common changes include:

  • Eating and Drinking Less
A decrease in appetite is normal. Your loved one may no longer want food or fluids, and that’s okay. Their body no longer needs as much nourishment.
  • Bladder and Bowel Changes
Loss of control or changes in color and consistency are common as muscles relax and the body slows down.
  • Breathing Changes
Breathing may become irregular—sometimes faster, sometimes slower—with occasional pauses. This is a natural part of the process.
  • Changes in Body Temperature
You may notice cooler hands and feet, or fluctuations in body temperature.
  • Skin Changes
Skin may appear pale, blotchy, or bluish, especially on the hands, feet, and knees, as circulation decreases.
  • Mental and Emotional Changes
Your loved one may become confused, restless, withdrawn, or behave differently. They may sleep much more or seem unresponsive.
  • Visions and Conversations About Journeys
It’s common for people near the end of life to talk about seeing loved ones who have already died, or to speak of “going home” or taking a journey.
These experiences are normal and can often be a source of comfort.
